When Motivation Wanes

Keeping Motivation Going when you are working at home

One of the biggest thing I miss about this period of working from home is the lack of the unexpected interaction with people, like when you are walking to your office floor and meet people for a chat , or a quick coffee with a work friend . The sameness of some of the days can make it feel hard and that can really affect motivation.  I recently had a few days of being very busy and it make it harder to stay motivated to exercise and one day I skipped it entirely but ended up feeling tired sluggish and guilty so I didn’t benefit in the end from not doing it. All the research shows that daily exercise is so good for our physical and mental health so having some things which help our motivation when it wanes is great especially as we have all been at home for so long. Here are some of the things which are helping me and Id love to hear what tips you use to keep the routine going.

1)     It’s the first thing I do (apart from get a coffee) so I don’t have time to put other obstacles in the way of getting my exercise done. Lots of people enjoy getting their workout done early and the benefits of that early workout last through the day.

2)     I have taken to writing my exercise time into my diary and that way it is in there – if your diary is public and used by others to schedule meetings, put your workout into the diary so that the time can’t be booked.

3)     Arrange to meet someone on your workout  - pretty much everyone is working out on Zoom so arrange to do it at the same time with a friend or family member and that accountability makes it easier to stay motivated. You can workout live on our ZOOM 8ams and meet our gang – people have remarked how they like seeing everyone even for a few minutes afterwards.

4)     Make it as easy as possible – put your workout clothes out the night before, put the mat out in the room you are going to workout in.

5)     Track your progress and goals – if you set a goal like working out for 30 minutes every day or getting a certain amount of steps in, that can help you stay motivated as you start to tot up progress towards your goal. Fitbits and similar wearables can help you track your goals and the feedback from them can also help keep you motivated.

6)     Make sure you have variety in your workout – Pick an instructor who programs with a mix of strength, conditioning and mobility work with lots of different exercises, different intensities, some easier days, some harder days. Variety keeps us interested and its easier to stay motivated.
