Become the change you want to see
So you want to help your friends or family make some healthy changes to their activity levels or with their diet yet they just won’t listen to you God dammmmmit! So what do you do? Well you could keep knocking hard on that door and get zero reply or you could try the reverse approach and simply continute to become the change you would like to see in others.
My wife recently showed me a video with Michelle Obama doing a push up throwdown with Ellen on her TV show and I must say I was really impressed. Here’s the video -
A few points if I may -
1. Their range of motion could be better i.e. they both should lower all the way to the floor but a world of a difference better than the muck being demonstrated on Today FM here
2. Who gives a fig about a few inches short in range of motion! Ellen is 54yrs old and Michelle is 48yrs old. They both hold a good midline and even without being FULL range this is still massively impressive in my opinion as I regularly work with guys (not in any major way overweight also), never mind women, in their 20′s and 30′s that could not do 20reps using the same range of motion. So guys – do more press ups because there are ladies in their 50′s showing you up.
3. This is a really important milestone because you have two of the most influential women in the world showing you – ’we workout, we’re strong, beautiful and ooze confidence.’ They didn’t have to get up on a soap box to TELL everyone to go workout and stay in shape. They simply showed you what they were able to do and left the door open. Don’t get me wrong this is not some Rosa Parks moment but for the fitness community this is bloody huge. This might not seem like a big deal to those that currently exercise and can do the basics well but this is not directed at you. You are part of the minority. The vast majority of people I work with initially can’t do many of the basics well to begin with and it’s not until they knuckle down and work on these basics so they become easy that they start to look and feel their best.
Getting in great shape does not happen by accident – what did you do today to take a single step towards your goal?

If you want to help people around you look and feel their best then forget about trying to change them and instead carry on with what you are doing to help YOU feel and look YOUR best. They might just listen to you when you stop pushing and start inspiring plus you never know when a push up throwdown could hapen in some alcohol fueled moment and they REALLY sit up and take notice of all your hard work.
