The Ultimate Energy Bars
In case you missed it – The best dam tasting paleo/energy bar (low carb, medium protein and high in good fats) you have ever had -
Everyone that has tried them so far have been very impressed and the finshed product looks like this -
Paleo energy bars and some great coffee from Hasbean or Square mile coffee and you are good to go!
My daugher making the no so paleo cakes but loving it anyway.
Ingredients -
200g blended nuts (mix of almonds, cashew, walnuts and brazil are best)
150g dessicated coconut
1 tablespoon wheat grass (optional)
2 tablespoons of almond/cashew nut butter (melted down at low temp)
200g of coconut oil (melted and added to above nut butter)
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
100g of 70-90% melted dark chocolate
This is the easy part – combine and pop in the fridge for an hour. You will NOT be disappointed! Just check out the comments below

They look lovely, will give them a go. I made the ones you linked to from rawcrossfit. Used a 50/50 carob/cocoa mix. They stayed too wet even after refrigerating so I added more of the mix and they turned out great. Kept really well in the fridge.
Tried them from your recipe,(had to use peanut butter instead of almond this time) and they turned out great. A nice treat after a workout for sure.
Not one person has come back and not liked them and the positive effect they have on our body!!
What do you mean by blended nuts?
Whole nuts – stick them in a magimix/blender and blend away until they are quite fine. Simples
Might try these, look yummy! don’t eat chocolate though…any ideas what I could add instead?
You do not need the cholcolate but some people are using carob powder if you wish
not a big fan of it… you know me – lil miss picky!
I’ll try ‘em without!
Having trouble finding coconut oil got walnut oil in Tesco, is there a real difference? Also i purchased Almond Marzipan is that the same as almond butter?
Sorry man but a massive NO to both – get them in health food shop.
Walnut oil is not going to work at all – they will just fall apart and the almond marzipan most likely has sugar in it.
Pop into health food shop asap
I’ve just put a batch of these in the fridge
I used 200g nuts/150g coconut as per recipe but it was a bit runny, so made it up to 300g/200g as in the video.
Dom, do you know anywhere that sells reasonably priced coconut oil? €5.65 for 200g in the healthfood store in Blanch seems a bit steep. Mind you, another store was €15.99 for 450g.
You can get the coconut oil from any indian or asian shop (there are a few in the city centre) and expect to pay €2 for 250ml of it. The quantity of nuts and dessicated coconut really is up to you as i eye ball it every time and if unsure add less coconut oil at first so if its a little dry i just add in a little more oil. Hope that helps
Cheers Dom. €2 sounds a lot better for coconut oil.
ps. I approve of the gaggia and rocky in the background. I had a bar with Has Bean’s Yirgacheffe this morning—both absolutely delicious!
No worries man and i get my coconut oil in the mosque in clonskeagh or there are two Asian/Indian shops just around the corner from the bleeding horse pub at the top of camden street.
Yes the coffee is a big love of mine and just cant understand people drinking starbucks or worse still instant coffee – standards really i suppose.
For anyone without a processor or who likes short-cuts Lidl now have ground almonds and ground hazelnuts in beside their dessicated coconut. It is €1.79 for 200g, just checked Tesco’s site and it is €2.49 for 100g so great value too.
Tesco price is just for the almonds, they don’t have the hazelnuts. This recipe literally takes minutes to make up.
Super tip liz and hope the body is loosening out after that great session you did
I was lookig forward to making these for ages and they’re great. I made use of what I had in the house. You could try them with figs/dates or prunes cut up and blitzed in a food proccessor with the nuts instead of chocolate. I used less chocolate and added prunes. I also lightly toasted the nuts first and added pumpkin seeds to the blender. I used fresh frozen (grated) coconut toasted instead of the dessicated. I hadn’t realised that the almond butter I was using was salted, but I think it actually made them better!
Delighted you like them and I have yet to meet someone that has not loved them.
Keep mixing it up as variety is key with making anything
Just made my first batch…in the fridge now….cant wait to try them.
Enjoy!!
just made a batch. Fantastic!
total winner i know – pass it on!
Top drawer! Finally got some coconut oil to make these…man they are tasty!
Cheers!
You’re welcome and pass the video and post on to others if you wish
Made these at the weekend – very easy to make and really tasty!
Yes they are soooo good and totally keep your nutrition on track
[...] You really need to have something like this near you at all times just in case you get a little peckish and I combine that with my famous paleo bars to keep me going throught the day – what do you mean you have not made the paleo bars yet! Here is the link – The Ultimate energy bars [...]
Wonderful! This bit is precisly I was searching for. Please keep blogging and I will keep coming back your blog.
How long would a batch of these keep for in the fridge?
I love these, thanks for sharing.
ABout 4-5 days as they are completely uncooked. Share on to others!!
Delicious!!!!! Thanks for the recipe..
Will look forward to snacking when I’m out on my bike..;)
Do you know how many calories per 50g???
Hi brian, no idea on the calorie count. Best advice is to enjoy them as the calories are all from very nutritious sources – just refrain from eating the whole tray in a day!! This happens for many people as they are sooo tempting so give away a few
I struggled with the portions on these and ended up using bun cases and splitting the mix into 12 bun shaped bars.
I also added all the ingredients into livestrong to get a calorie count on each bar, i don’t use coconut so it’s slightly different to your recipe, but you can create your own recipe on livestrong and get precise nutritional value which is great.
Many thanks for recipe and link to livestrong. Dropped 40lb since October and still going strong.

Man cheers for that and yes the addition of the cocnut would bump it up a little more.
Keep up the super weight loss and hope you are hitting some good metcons in your workouts and working on mobility
this post is very usefull thx!
Delicious…they remind me of chocolate crackles made with rice bubbles (rice crispies) in Australia, made with Copha (hydrogenated coconut oil).
I used to miss them but no more, these are fabulous!
Thanks for sharing the recipe.
[...] You could try make these but be careful they’re seriously yummy! http://www.dominicmunnelly.ie/2010/12/ultimate-enery-bars/ [...]
Been a long time reader of your blog, and just wanted to say keep up the good work!
Gave these ago today after the invitational following the ingredients list. First things first the coconut oil and the almond butter were very expensive lol. Anyway I ground up 200g’s of various nuts and added the coconut then melted down the 200g of coconut oil and 2 tablespoons of almond butter. When I started mixing the nuts with the liquid it was way too watery so I ground up the rest of the nuts I had and then added the dark chocolate it was still too watery but I had no nuts left
. I put it in the freezer for 30 mins took it out and it was solid and I cut it up using a pizza cutter. They dont taste too bad but they are very oily(Is this normal) id say there probably too much coconut oil in mine
Ah well hopefully I make a better batch next time.
Did you add in dessicated coconut?
Thanks! Just came across this recipe on the weekend. Made a couple of changes. Added pumpkin and sunflower seeds along with protein powder. Wow – by far the best protein bars I’ve ever made. Will definitely make over and over again. Cheers!
cheers and thats the great part about it that you can add in or take out what you like or dont like. All the best and pass on to others
Hello Dominic! These look delicious but I am allergic to nuts – oh noes! Any ideas on what I could put in instead of nuts? Perhaps ground seeds (pumpkin/sesame etc), I’m okay on coconut just not almonds, cashews, peanuts etc. Thanks in advance!
Hi ruth,
yes seeds will work just perfect but will just have to use lots of them or just bump up the dessicated coconut and rasins amount to compensate a bit. Hope that helps and let me know how they turn out
bars are great… i am love the work you and your brother do..
Cheers Marc and we will keep leading the way and helping people to look and feel their best
I just came across your site from another site, and wow they look so easy to do, my son is in college and very peckish during the day so he’s going to be getting theses. Just 1 question, with the above ingredients how many bars would I make?
Thanks again.
cheers and they make about 12bars
All the best and pass on to others that need the help
I made these before I started work and WOW, tasty nutritious and very easy to do. Thanks
Hi there – just wondering is there an alternative to coconut oil you would recommend as I cannot tolerate the taste of the coconut! Thanks a mill
Yes give butter a try as its high in saturated fats just like coconut oil
These look great! Just wondering if you could recommend an alternative to coconut oil? As I can’t tolerate that and was thinking of trying Grapeseed Oil as an alternative but not sure if it is a healthy alternative?
Thanks a mill
I would try making them with butter but in lower amounts – grapeseed would not be good as its too high in omega 6.
Have been meaning to try these for a long time having come across the recipe ages ago on the boards.ie H&F section.
Frankly, I’m blown away. I honestly can’t believe how tasty they are how simple they are to make! I really don’t like dark chocolate even though I’ve a very sweet tooth – but the coconut (which I love) really balances out the taste. Knowing how much ‘goodness’ is in them, I’d have been happy enough if they just tasted ‘alright’ – but they taste great!
I made my first batch exactly as above (minus the wheat germ) but I think I will add a little dried fruit & goji berries to the next batch.
Thanks again for the recipe – and if ever I get the chance, I owe ya a pint!
Anytime dude and pass on to others that could do with the help. All the best
Hi,
I was just wondering how long do the bars last in the fridge. The batch made much more than I’ll eat in a month!!! Thanks.
The last forever as they are not cooked. You can even pop them in the freezer in batches and take out as needed
its a greens product that i add in to increase alkalinity
